All the fun Angry Birds characters you know, brought into an unfamiliar fantasy world for a light-hearted and fun RPG

Though it didnโ€™t see release, it was a blast working with the Angry Birds license to develop a turn-based character collection RPG. Getting into the Angry Birds art style was a lot of fun, but we had an interesting challenge of slightly aging up the art style - still keeping it fun, accessible, and charming, but with more details and higher fidelity for a slightly older audience. Alongside our Studio Art Director, I also worked with the team at Rovio to make sure the art stayed true to their brand.

User Interface

I worked on all manner of 2D art for the game, from characters, portraits and skins to storyboards, icons, and spent a large portion of my time on the project defining the look and feel of the UI. Being that the plot of the game took place across all of time and space, we had a unique challenge adapting the characters and art style to something that could fit that amount of diverse biomes and situations while also feeling like a cohesive whole.

Everything has character

Just like all the fun outfits adorning the characters, it was important that everything from the icons, to the props brought that same type of energy

We settled on the idea of using one of the main characterโ€™s mystical books as the theme for our UI, adding in skeuomorphic elements for both background detail as well as points of interaction. Nods to the mystical nature of this book also helped inform some of our animations and transitions throughout the UI. It was important to get the personality of the book across while also keeping the UI adaptable and not too chunky so as not to cut into precious screen real estate on smaller devices.
